The account of “Peter ‘walking’ on water” can be found in Matthew 14:22-33.
The short version is: Jesus had told the disciples to go on ahead of him to the boat while he dismissed the crowds and prayed.  The boat had drifted from the shore and was a far way off.  Jesus came walking to them on the sea.  They were terrified, but Peter then asked to come to Jesus.  He stepped out in faith onto the water and when he noticed how strong the winds were, his faith started to falter.  He started to sink and he asked Jesus to save him.  When they were back on the boat, the winds died down.

In asking permission from Jesus to step onto the water, Peter looks to Christ to lead him (vs 28). “So, Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus” (vs. 29). Do you turn to God in prayer and really seek his lead on both the big and little things in your life?

Put yourself in Peter’s sandals: Imagine stepping out of a boat onto choppy waters, in a sea of unknown mysteries. Would you have enough faith to step out? OR, would you be holding onto the side, not fully trusting? Would you get off the boat at all?

Jesus is right in front of Peter, but because of the storm he is facing, he starts to doubt, and his vision is clouded. The same God who created everything was also in the storm itself. However, Peter could see only the destructive power of the storm and lost sight of God’s constant presence with him.

What is your reaction when you face waves of difficulties? Do you falter in your faith? Do you cry to the Lord for help? Do you trust that even in adversity God is by your side?

As I’ve been meeting regularly with my mentor, the extra time spent in my Bible has been amazing.  I’ve been learning that the more time spent with God deepens my relationship with him.  It also has been helping me to seek and trust HIM more in all circumstances that I face.  What a wonderful and awesome God we serve.  I encourage you and challenge you to start a daily devotional time or join a Bible study!

“I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:21
