A few weeks ago, the children of the church led the service at the church I attend with my host family in Kitale. They sang, danced, put on skits, led worship, and hosted a great service. One of their skits was a small reenactment of when Jesus was preaching and the disciples tried to turn children away from Jesus. This is Matthew’s account in chapter 19:13-15, Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
Jesus wants EVERYONE to be part of the kingdom-elderly, middle aged, and yes, even kids.
When I was with Irene in Pokot, we had arrived at the house of one of the girls. She wanted to do something in “town” so we went. She had us sit on a bench while she proceeded to do whatever she was doing. She was gone for a long time. But you know what? God used that time beautifully.
As Irene and I were sitting there, kids from around the community saw us and came and sat. Within 5 minutes, we had a crowd of about 15- 20 kids/young teens. Some of them tried speaking English to me. Other times Irene translated. But we talked about all different kinds of topics. And immediately, my mind flashed back to the skit the kids did in church. These kids were hungry. They were interested in what we had to say. They were curious. And it was a great opportunity to share the love of Jesus…because the kingdom of God belongs to us all.
