Yes, that’s right, we are celebrating 2012 here in Ethiopia (they use a different calendar system)! Houses are decorated, coffee is made, Ambasha (African celebration bread that is slightly sweet) and injera (flat bread made from teff) and wat (stew) has been consumed, church was attended, flowers were given, ketema (cut green grass) is spread on the floor, the chicken was slaughtered…
The new year traditionally marks the end of the rainy season! (The rainy season is real! It downpours for hours at a time EVERY DAY during this season! So, I will be thankful when the sun is shinning again all the time!)
We all trucked our way to church this morning…skirts, jeans, and rainboots. We sat through a 2+ hour service in which I held multiple kids the entire time.
After lunch Katy and I went with Megersa to visit the Children’s Village and house moms.
We just popped in to say hello, looked at the decorations, took some pictures, and gave hugs to the kids. We did this for several houses and ended in the last house with coffee and more ambasha.
I tried the coffee (even though I absolutely dislike coffee), and thankfully Katy drank the rest for me. Overall, it was just a sweet time of being invited to celebrate with these lovely families and women (and of course time to hold the adorable kids and hear their precious laughs!).
So, HAPPY 2012 Ethiopia!!!
