Have you ever participated in feet washing? It’s a regular thing I participate in while counseling during the summer. There are a range of emotions behind the high schoolers as we gather for this time. A lot of people have never done this before and don’t want to participate. Some of them have feet fetishes. Then there are those who humble themselves and participate.

At my church, I can remember one time where feet washing was offered…during a Holy Week Service. I wish it was more than this because I think it’s a wonderful demonstration and reminder of who we are to Christ (someone he would give up everything for) and who we are in Christ (humble servants to the world).

Go ahead, open your Bible to John 13 and read verses 1-17.

Isn’t this a wonderful demonstration? Jesus, King of Kings, gets down on his knees and becomes a servant and washes his disciples’ feet. At first, Peter refuses to have his feet cleaned. Maybe due to pride? Jesus then tells him, “Unless I wash you, you have no part of me.” None of them understood it at the time, but Jesus was basically saying, if you don’t accept me as your Lord and Savior, my blood will not wash you clean of your sins (pride, anger, lust, etc.). They did not understand the spiritual cleansing Jesus would provide (by salvation through his death on the cross) and continues to provide today. Peter then wanted more than just his feet cleaned.

If you look at the history, before going to a feast, people would bathe themselves. Upon arrival at their destination, they only needed their feet cleaned. This is a great reminder.  As Christians, if you believe in Christ, ask him into your heart, and repent, YOU are FORGIVEN! That SMALL act of faith, takes care of ALL the dirtiness in our lives.

We, as Christians, should not take this demonstration lightly. Just like Jesus became a servant, we are to become servants too…washing others’ feet and performing tasks to serve others. So, although you may not practice foot washing regularly at your church, remember the significance and the example set by Christ.

Whose “feet” can you “wash” today, tomorrow, and ten years from now? It’s time for you and me to step out and be the hands and feet of Christ in our everyday lives.

Oh, and if you ever have the opportunity, be brave and try feet washing. I promise it won’t be a disappointment.
