I’ve only had the privilege of really working with kids three times on the race. Colombia, Peru and now! It was only four days, but it’s been the best four days! During team time on the last night of kid’s camp, I told Team Fly this has been my best week on the race. Not only was I with a great team, but this past week has brought me so much JOY!
Here’s how the week looked: T-TH 70-100 plus kids came to camp. We started off by singing songs with them, which sometimes led into skits, and telling stories about God (Which I held a child during each time—my heart was full).
Then there was a tea break with bread, small groups (Bible lesson and more songs!), lunch, and then games with the small groups.
Kids starting showing up around 8:30am and didn’t leave until after 4pm. There was no means of transportation this year (not enough funds) so everyone who came walked. CHILDREN 2-13+ WALKED to camp. Some of them would walk over 1.5 hours just to come (by themselves). Which seems to be the norm in Africa.
We sang some songs in Swahili, some in English. Brayan and Kelly led worship the first two days, while some of us from WR lead on Thursday and Friday. Brayan and Kelly are entertainers for sure.
They captured the kids’ attention and they LOVED them. I think the kids also enjoyed learning some new songs we had up our sleeves (and I loved learning some new songs to take home—from both parties!)
One of my favorites was:
Jehovah has the final say (Just imagine this with kids and lots of energy!!)
Leader: Who has the final say?
Kids: Jehovah has final say!
Leader: Who has the final say?
Kids: Jehovah has final say!
Together: Jehovah turns my life around… Jehovah turns my life around He makes a way where there is no way.
Small groups: I had the privilege of working with Priska, Elias, Brayan, Ben, and Jen. We made an awesome team! We told stories like: Elisha and the Widow, Joseph, and The Prodigal Son. We acted out skits. Each day we also memorized part of the memory verse (Jer 29: 11-14) until we had it all down on the last day. We even made a song out of it to help them memorize it and then performed it during the talent show on Friday. We sang lots and lots of songs. Played lots and lots of games. Prayed. Shared God’s love and made a lot of connections.
Lunch was a big deal. A lot of times families only can afford one or two meals a day and RARELY meat. So this was special for them. Especially the last two days—they had MEAT! It wasn’t much meat (not like we eat in America), but it was something. They also got sweets (candy) the last day and juice.
We ended the week with a talent show and the kids loved it. I couldn’t have imagined a better week. I was able to be fun and silly and enjoy these kids so much.
We had over 50 kids accept Christ and we prayed over all the kids all the time throughout the week. God worked this week! PRAISE THE LORD!! AMEN HALLELUJAH AMEN!
Oh so many hearts you have touch. Our LORD has placed where he needed you. You have shared and treasured everyone on this journey regardless of their circumstances, but there is something surrounding you and children! They cling to you! Hmmm! Much love Kelly!
Kelly, we have been so encouraged by your faithfulness and courage! I’m so glad to hear that you are being blessed as you bless others.
